BECE Subjects, Past Papers & Study Plan (2025)

Everything parents and JSS3 students need to know about BECE subject choices, access to past papers, and a 6-week revision plan.

  • Subjects: Core (Maths, English, Basic Science & Tech, Social/Civic) plus applied (Business, Agric, ICT), languages & electives.
  • Past papers: Provided by schools/state boards or NECO; verify authenticity when using third-party sites.
  • Study plan: Daily practice in maths/English/reasoning + weekly timed mocks over a focused 6-week cycle.

Subject structure

BECE covers a mix of core, vocational, language and elective subjects. The exact combination depends on the state/NECO circular, but most include:

  • Core: English Studies, Mathematics, Basic Science & Technology, Social Studies/Civic Education.
  • Vocational/Applied: Business Studies, Agricultural Science, Basic Technology, Home Economics, Computer Studies/ICT.
  • Languages & others: CRS/IRS, one Nigerian language (Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa), French, Cultural & Creative Arts, Physical & Health Education.

Each state decides how many subjects candidates must sit; confirm with your school’s BECE circular.

Past papers & practice

  • Source: Schools usually provide past papers (from the state exam board or NECO). Official portals may have downloadable sets.
  • Use cautiously: Many websites share PDFs labelled “Junior WAEC past questions”. Verify year/state to ensure they match your child’s curriculum.
  • Practice tips: Work under timed conditions; after marking, log errors (topic, question type, mistake, correct method).
  • Group study: Students can form small revision groups to exchange solutions and peer-mark.

6-week revision plan

  • Week 1: Maths fundamentals (fractions, decimals, percentages); English grammar & comprehension.
  • Week 2: Basic Science & Tech (energy, systems, health); Civic Education & Social Studies.
  • Week 3: Business Studies & Agric Science (basic economics, food production); ICT basics.
  • Week 4: Nigerian Language + CRS/IRS; mixed short quizzes.
  • Week 5: Full past-paper practice; mark & review weak areas.
  • Week 6: Two full mocks (different subjects each day); exam-day rehearsal.

Sample daily timetable

  • Morning (30m): Maths drill set
  • Afternoon (30m): English comprehension
  • Evening (40m): Subject rotation (Science, Civic, Business, ICT)
  • Weekend: One full past-paper under exam timing

Parent checklist

  • Ask the school which subject combination applies and confirm enrolment.
  • Secure at least 2–3 years of past papers for practice.
  • Set up a revision calendar at home (mark weeks, subjects, mock days).
  • Encourage a daily error log to track recurring mistakes.

FAQs

How many subjects must my child take?

States set their own minimum/maximum. Typically 8–10 subjects, with all core plus some vocational/language options.

Where do I get official past papers?

From your child’s school or state exam board. Some NECO portals also host BECE papers. Avoid unverified PDFs that may be outdated.

How can we prepare with limited internet?

Print or photocopy practice sets; use simple stopwatches for timing; build offline vocabulary flashcards.
