We use our senses to find out what is around us. Humans have five senses:

  • Sight: we use our eyes to see.
  • Hearing: we use our ears to hear.
  • Smell: we use our nose to smell.
  • Touch: we use our skin to touch.
  • Taste: we use our mouth to taste.

Activity

I can’t see!

Sofia is playing a game. She has to put the arm on the boy. Her eyes are covered. She cannot use her sense of sight. Zara is telling her what to do. Sofia is using her sense of hearing. Play this game. You have to listen carefully.

Was it easy to put the body parts in the right place?

Think like a scientist

What can you smell?

You will need: some things that have a strong smell in pots that have lids with holes.

Arun is investigating what is inside. He is using his sense of smell to make a prediction. Arun writes his predictions and results in a table.

Try doing this investigation.
Record your predictions and results in a table.

Do you close your eyes to use your other senses?
Does closing your eyes make it easier to smell or listen carefully?

Look what I can do!

• I can name the five senses and say what they do.
• I can name the part of the body we use for each sense.
• I can use my different senses to observe things.
