The French physicist Henri Becquerel (Figure 15.9) is credited with the discovery of radioactivity in 1896.
He had been looking at the properties of uranium compounds when he noticed that they affected photographic film–he realised that they were giving out radiation all the time and he performed several ingenious experiments to shed light on the phenomenon.
