🌟 This Topic is About...

  • 🦴 I will learn the names of some of the bones in my body.
  • 📍 I will find out where the main bones are located.
  • 🧍‍♂️ I will make my own model of a skeleton.
  • 🤔 I will think about how a model is different from the real thing.

Get ready to explore your amazing skeleton! 💪🦴

📖 Tap to Learn the Meanings!
  • 🦴 bones: the hard parts inside your body that give it shape and support.
  • 🏗️ frame: the structure that supports something, like your skeleton supports your body.
  • 🦵 hip: the part of your body where your leg joins your body.
  • 😀 jaw: the part of your skull that moves when you talk or chew.
  • 🧍 model: a small copy or example that shows what something looks like.
  • 🫁 rib cage: the curved bones that protect your heart and lungs.
  • 💀 skeleton: all the bones in your body together.
  • 🧠 skull: the bone that protects your brain.
  • 🪆 spine: the row of bones down your back that helps you stand straight.

Great job learning new words! 🎉

What is a skeleton?

People and many animals have bones inside their bodies. These bones are joined together to form a skeleton. A skeleton is a strong frame that supports our body from the inside.

We know about animals, like dinosaurs, that lived very long ago from their skeletons.

The human skeleton

Our skeletons are made of 206 bones. These bones are different sizes and shapes.

You can feel your bones through your skin. Bones are hard and strong. How many bones in your body can you name?

🔬 Think like a Scientist: Make a Model Skeleton

🤔 Question: How can we make a model of a skeleton to understand the shapes and positions of human bones?

🧰 You will need: Drinking straws and bottle tops, modelling clay or different shapes of pasta, scissors ✂️, black construction paper or stiff card, paper glue, white paper, and a pen 🖊️

📝 Method:

  • Look at a picture of the human skeleton. 👀
  • Notice the sizes and shapes of the bones and how they are arranged. 💀🦴
  • Plan how you will make a skeleton using drinking straws and modelling clay or different pasta shapes. Include the skull, jaw, rib cage, spine, arm bones, and leg bones.
  • Arrange the parts of your model on the paper to make the skeleton. 🧩
  • When you are happy with your skeleton, glue the parts onto the paper. 🧴
  • Write labels for the different bones of your skeleton and stick them next to the bones they name. 🏷️

❓ Questions:

1. How is your model skeleton the same as a real skeleton? How is it different? 🤔
2. Look at other pairs’ models. Can you think of any ways you could make your model better? 👥
🌟 Tap to See Answers
  • 1: The model shows the main bones in the right places, but it is smaller and made from different materials. 🦴
  • 2: You could improve it by making the bones more detailed or placing them more accurately. 💪

Fantastic teamwork! You built and compared real scientific models. 👏🧠

💪 Look what I can do!

  • ☑️ I can identify the skull, jaw, spine, rib cage, arm bones and leg bones in my body.
  • ☑️ I can make a model of a skeleton.
  • ☑️ I can explain how a model is different to the real thing.
