🌟 This Topic is About...

  •  I will investigate how we see things that do not give off their own light.
  •  I will make predictions and check if my results support them.
  •  I will make a clear conclusion from my results.

Let’s explore how light helps us see the world around us!

🌟 Key Words

  • reflect
  • source
📖 Tap to Learn the Meanings!
  •  reflect: when light bounces off a surface, like a mirror.
  •  source: the place where light or energy comes from.

Great job learning new words! 🎉

🔬 Think like a Scientist: Investigate How We See an Object

Question: How does light help us to see objects?

You will need: A large cardboard box with lid 📦, a flashlight 🔦 with batteries, a small object such as a coin 🪙, and a pen knife or craft knife (with adult supervision).

⚠️ Safety First: Be careful when using the knife. Always ask an adult to help you make the holes.

📝 Method:

  • Cut two holes in the lid of the box as shown in the picture. One hole must be big enough for your flashlight to fit through, and the other hole must be big enough for you to look through.
  • Place the coin on the bottom of the box. Then, replace the lid.
  • Cover the flashlight hole with your hand. Predict whether you will be able to see the coin through the other hole.
  • Test your prediction.
  • Now shine your flashlight through the flashlight hole. Predict again whether you will be able to see the coin when you look through the other hole.
  • Test your prediction and observe what happens. 👀

💡 When light enters the box, it reflects off the coin and travels to your eyes — this is how we see!

❓ Questions:

1. What happened when you covered the flashlight hole?
2. What changed when you shone the flashlight into the box?
3. What does this tell you about how we see objects?
🌟 Tap to See Answers
  • 1: You could not see the coin because there was no light entering the box.
  • 2: When light shone into the box, it reflected off the coin, allowing you to see it.
  • 3: We can only see objects when light reflects off them and enters our eyes. 💡👁️

Fantastic observation! You’ve just explored how light makes vision possible.

🔦 FUN QUESTIONS — How We See Things

1. Can you see the coin without shining the flashlight?

🌟 Show answer
No, you can’t see the coin without light. We need light to enter our eyes to see any object.

2. Can you see the coin when you shine the flashlight?

🌟 Show answer
Yes! When the flashlight shines, light reflects off the coin and travels into your eyes — that’s how you can see it.

3. What conclusion do you reach about how we see things that are not sources of light?

🌟 Show answer
We see objects that are not light sources because light reflects off them and enters our eyes. Light travels from the light source (flashlight) to the object (coin). It then bounces off the object into our eyes. This is how we see!

📝 How am I doing?

💪 Look what I can do!

  • ☑️ I can understand that I see an object because light reflects off the object into my eyes.
  • ☑️ I can make a prediction and see if results support my predictions.
  • ☑️ I can make a conclusion based on an investigation.
