Think like a scientist 1 – Plants in different habitats

Question: Where can plants grow in different habitats around our school?

Equipment: Notebook or recording sheet, pencil, (optional) camera or tablet to take photographs.

Safety First:

  • Walk carefully and follow your school’s rules when you are outside.
  • Do not pick plants unless your teacher says it is allowed.
  • Stay with your group or an adult.

Method:

  1. Go outside and look at different places around your school.
  2. Look for plants growing in different habitats, such as:
    • against a wall
    • in a shady place
    • in a wet place
    • in a dry pathway
    • under something
    • in a plant pot
  3. Choose one plant to look at closely. This example in the book shows a plant growing on a path. Its roots have grown down a crack to find soil.
  4. Take a photograph or draw a picture of a plant and where it is growing.
  5. Record your plants and their habitats in your notebook or on a simple table or chart.

1. Which different habitats did you find for plants around your school?
2. How does the place where a plant is growing help it to get what it needs?
3. Did you see any plants growing in cracks or on paths like the example? What do their roots do?

  • Plants might be found beside walls, in grassy areas, near drains or puddles, under benches, in plant pots or flower beds.
  • Each habitat gives plants things they need, such as light, water, air and soil to grow their roots.
  • Plants growing in cracks on paths push their roots down into small spaces where there is soil and water.

Environments where plants don’t grow are special places on Earth where conditions are too hard for plants to survive.

Different plants like different habitats, so each kind of plant grows best in the place that suits it.

This means that in most parts of planet Earth we can find plants growing in places that give them what they need.

 

🌱 Spotting Empty Environments

The pictures show some of the rare places where plants don’t grow at all, because the habitat does not provide what plants need.

 
 

QUESTIONS – PLANTS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENTS

1. Why are there no plants in these environments?

In these environments plants cannot get what they need to live. There may be almost no water, the temperatures may be too hot or too cold, the soil may be missing, or there may be very little light. Because plants cannot get enough water, light and suitable soil, they cannot grow there.

2. Think of another environment where plants cannot grow.

Plants cannot grow in places like deep caves with no light, on the surface of active volcanoes, or on bare ice in the coldest parts of Antarctica. In these environments conditions are too extreme and plants cannot get the water, light and soil they need.

What to do:

  1. Look at all the different plants which grow in a habitat.
  2. Draw the plants growing in their habitat.

WHAT WE LEARNED

Today we learned that a plant’s habitat is the special place where it lives and gets what it needs. We found out that different plants live in different habitats and that we can compare these places and record what we see in drawings and tables. Great work exploring plant habitats!
