This Topic is About...

  • I will learn about the different types of teeth and what they do.
  • I will learn how to look after my teeth and keep them healthy.
  • I will check if my predictions are correct or not.
  • I will observe human teeth and make simple models of them.
  • I will learn how to investigate teeth safely.

You are getting ready to explore how teeth work!

Key Words

  • calcium
  • canine
  • dairy
  • dentist
  • fluoride
  • gums
  • incisor
  • molar
  • toothpaste
Tap to Learn the Meanings!
  • calcium: A mineral that helps make teeth and bones strong.
  • canine: A sharp tooth used for tearing food.
  • dairy: Foods made from milk, like cheese and yogurt.
  • dentist: A person who checks and cares for your teeth.
  • fluoride: A mineral that helps protect teeth from decay (cavities).
  • gums: The soft pink parts of your mouth that hold your teeth in place.
  • incisor: A flat front tooth used for biting and cutting food.
  • molar: A large back tooth used for chewing and grinding food.
  • toothpaste: A paste used with a toothbrush to clean teeth and help protect them.

Keep practising these words as you learn about teeth!

Looking After Teeth

We need to look after our teeth.

What We Use Teeth For

We use teeth to eat and we also use teeth to talk.

Calcium Helps Teeth Stay Strong

You can keep your teeth healthy by eating a healthy diet.

Foods with Calcium

Calcium is a material that helps to make teeth strong.

Eating Calcium-Rich Foods

Milk and other dairy foods, some beans and some fish have calcium in them.

A Simple Healthy Reminder

Make sure you eat some of these foods.

Sugar Can Harm Teeth

Food with lots of sugar is bad for teeth.

Eat Less Sugary Food

Eat very little food with lots of sugar.

Brushing Every Day

Brush your teeth twice every day for two minutes to keep them clean.

Toothpaste with Fluoride

Use toothpaste with fluoride in it.

Fluoride Protects Teeth

Fluoride helps to make your teeth strong.

Don’t Use Too Much Toothpaste

Do not use too much toothpaste.

Visiting the Dentist

Go to the dentist twice a year.

What the Dentist Does

The dentist will check your teeth are healthy and can help you look after them.

FUN QUESTIONS

1. What three things can you do to look after your teeth?

Show me
You can brush your teeth twice a day, avoid eating too many sugary foods, and visit the dentist regularly. These actions help keep teeth clean and healthy. Good care helps teeth last longer.

2. How much toothpaste should you use?

Show me
You should use a small amount of toothpaste, about the size of a pea. Using more than this does not clean teeth better. A small amount is enough to do the job well.

3. What do calcium and fluoride do?

Show me
Calcium helps make teeth strong and hard. Fluoride protects teeth by helping stop decay and damage. Together, they help keep teeth healthy.

Question: What does sugar do to teeth?

You will need:
a drink with lots of sugar, water, egg shells and two cups

Teeth are made of a similar material to egg shells.

To find out what sugar does to our teeth we can investigate what sugar does to egg shells. Look at the pictures to see what to do.

Predict what will happen to the egg shell in each cup. Record your prediction in a diagram.

Method:

  1. Place half an egg shell into each cup.
  2. Add water to one cup and a sugary drink to the other.
  3. After seven days see what has happened to the egg shell.

What did you find out at the end?
Explain what too much sugar can do to teeth.

Tap to see answer

The egg shell in the sugary drink becomes weaker or damaged compared to the egg shell in water. This shows that too much sugar can damage teeth by weakening their hard outer surface.

How am I doing?

Look at your predictions.
Can you say which were correct and which were not?

Tap to see answer

Check what actually happened to the egg shells. Predictions that match the results were correct, and the others were not. This helps you understand how scientists test their ideas.

The Main Types of Teeth

Humans have three main types of teeth: incisors, canines and molars. Teeth have roots to fix them to your gums.

Growing Up Teeth Numbers

Children have 20 baby teeth. As you grow older these teeth will fall out because larger adult teeth are growing in your gums. Adults have 32 teeth.

Question: How can we make a model of our teeth?

You will need:
a mirror and some modelling clay

Marcus is making a model of his teeth.

He is using a mirror to see how they look.

Method:

  1. Make a model of your own teeth.
  2. Look at them using a mirror.
  3. Touch and feel them too.

Safety First:

  • Wash your hands before and after you touch your teeth.
  • Do not touch other people’s teeth.

LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!

In this lesson, we learned about the three types of teeth and what each one does. We explored how sugar can affect teeth, made a model of our own teeth, and practiced staying safe during investigations. Great work building your science skills and taking care of your teeth!
