You will need: a torch with cells, a dark cupboard
Switch on the torch. Observe the light. Does the light come from the torch or go into the torch?
The torch you used in Activity 4.1a is a light source. Light travels from the torch in bands. A band of light is called a beam of light.

Light travels from the light source to the object. The light bounces or reflects off the object into your eyes. This is how you see the object.
You will need: a large cardboard box with lid, a torch with cells, a small object such as a coin pen knife or craft knife
Cut two holes in the lid of the box as shown in the picture. One hole must be big enough for your torch to fit through. The other hole must be big enough for you to see through. Place the small object (coin) on the bottom of the box and replace the lid on the box.

Cover the torch hole with your hand.
Predict whether you will be able to see the small object. Test your prediction.
Shine your torch through the torch hole.
Predict whether you will be able to see the small object now. Test your prediction.
1- Identify the source of light in the picture.
2- Explain, with a drawing, how the person can see the car. You can draw lines with arrows to show the direction in which the light travels.
3 Discuss how the person could see the car at night.
