🥗 What Is a Balanced Diet?

Our diet is all the food that we eat. We need a balanced diet to stay healthy. This means we must eat the right kinds of food and the right amount of food.

🍽️ Eating from All Food Groups

To have a balanced diet, we need to eat foods from all the different food groups. The picture shows the different food groups and how much we should eat of each group.

🥦 The Food Pyramid

Eating a variety of foods helps our bodies stay healthy. The food pyramid shows the main food groups and how much of each we should eat. Foods at the bottom, like fruits, vegetables, and grains, should make up the largest part of our diet. Foods at the top, like fats and sugars, should be eaten only in small amounts.

The food pyramid shows how much of each type of food we should eat for a balanced diet.

🍞 Good and Bad Carbohydrates

We need carbohydrates to give our bodies energy. However, not all carbohydrates are healthy. Foods like cakes, candy, and soft drinks contain a lot of sugar, which is a type of carbohydrate. Eating too much sugar can be harmful to our health.

The carbohydrates found in wholewheat bread and brown rice are much healthier than those in white bread and white rice. These “good carbohydrates” give us energy for longer and help our bodies work well.

🍎 FOOD GROUP QUESTIONS

1. Name one food from each group that you like to eat. 🍽️

🌟 Show me!
Fruits: banana 🍌
Vegetables: carrot 🥕
Carbohydrates: rice 🍚
Proteins: egg 🥚
Fats: butter 🧈
Great choices! 👏

2. Which food groups should we eat most of? 🥦

🌟 Show me!
We should eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates to stay healthy and full of energy! 🌽🍞

3. Which food group should we eat least of? 🍰

🌟 Show me!
We should eat fats, oils, and sugary foods the least, because too much can be unhealthy. 🍩

4. Which food group builds our muscles and helps us to grow? 💪

🌟 Show me!
The protein group builds our muscles and helps us grow. Foods like eggs, fish, and beans are rich in protein! 🐟🥚

5. Suggest a healthy school snack that contains a food from three of the food groups. 🎒

🌟 Show me!
A sandwich with wholewheat bread (carbohydrate), cheese (protein), and tomato slices (vegetable) makes a healthy snack! 🥪🍅
Great thinking! 👏

Water and fibre

Water is vital for the body's processes, including digestion. It also helps with cooling the body down via sweat and is a medium for waste removal. Fibre, derived from plants, aids in digestion by helping food pass through the digestive system. Foods rich in fibre include vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, brown rice, and whole-wheat bread.

Vitamins and minerals

Vitamins and minerals are essential in the food we consume. They support the body in many ways, like helping it function properly and stay healthy. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals include fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish, and they provide critical nutrients like calcium and iron. These minerals contribute to bone strength and blood health, while sodium is essential for hydration but must be consumed in moderation.

The human digestive system

The digestive system helps break down food into small particles, a process known as digestion. The mouth, stomach, and small intestine are the primary organs for this. As food is broken down, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and carried throughout the body, supplying nutrients to every part. Digestion starts in the mouth, aided by saliva, and continues in the stomach and small intestine.

Water expands

When heated, substances, including water, expand as their particles move faster and spread out. This is why water expands as it heats up. When cooled, its particles move slower and contract. This property of water is crucial in nature, as it affects the movement of water in different environments.

Think like a scientist 1

Investigate how well sound travels through different materials

What you will need: A bell or ticking clock, a balloon, a tin tray, and a buzzer (or another sound source).

Safety First: Be careful while using materials and making sounds. Do not touch any hot surfaces or sharp objects.

Method:

  1. Choose a sound source, such as a buzzer or ticking clock. This is your control variable.
  2. Test how well sound travels through four different materials, one of which must be air, one liquid, and one solid. These are your independent variables.
  3. Work with a partner: One makes the sound, while the other listens to the loudness of the sound. This is your dependent variable.
  4. Repeat the test with different materials for more reliable results.

Results:

Material sound travelled through Loudness of sound
Example: Balloon Loud

Follow-up Questions:

1. Identify your control, dependent, and independent variables.
2. Which material did the sound travel through best? Was this expected?
3. Describe any patterns you observed in your results.
Tap to See Answers
  • 1: The control is the sound source, the independent variables are the materials, and the dependent variable is the loudness of the sound.
  • 2: Sound travels best through solid materials because particles are closely packed, allowing quicker vibration transfer.
  • 3: The sound was loudest through the metal and quietest through the air.

Great job, young scientist!

Let’s Investigate!

Question: How well does sound travel through different materials?

Materials:

  • Buzzer
  • Balloon
  • Clock
  • Wooden block
  • Plastic container

Safety First:

  • Be careful when handling the buzzer!
  • Make sure the materials are safe to use.

Method:

  1. Set up the buzzer and test its sound.
  2. Place the buzzer near each material to test sound travel.
  3. Record how loud the sound is through each material.
  4. Repeat for each material three times for accurate results.

Follow-up Questions:

1. Which material did the sound travel through the best?
2. How did the materials affect the sound?
3. Why do you think the sound travels differently through different materials?
Tap to See Answers
  • 1: The sound travelled best through solid materials, like wood.
  • 2: Materials like plastic and air caused the sound to travel quieter.
  • 3: Sound travels faster through denser materials, such as solids.

Great job, young scientist!

WHAT WE LEARNED

Today, we learned that the boiling and freezing points of water are 100°C and 0°C respectively. We also explored how water expands when heated and contracts when cooled, and how different materials affect how sound travels. Keep up the great work!
