  • Unit 1: Living things
  • Unit 2: Sound
  • Unit 3: Materials in my world
  • Unit 4: The Earth
  • Unit 5: Humans
  • Unit 6: Forces

This Topic is About...

  • I will learn that some sounds are loud and some sounds are quiet.
  • I will sort sounds into loud sounds and quiet sounds.
  • I will write my results in a table.
  • I will make predictions and check if I was right.

Let’s listen carefully and discover how sounds are different!

Key Words

Tap to Learn the Meanings!
  • damage: Harm that makes something not work well or not look right.
  • danger: Something that could hurt you, so you need to be careful.
  • instruments: Tools you can use to make music, like drums or a flute.

  • loud: A sound that is very strong and easy to hear, even from far away.
  • music: Sounds made in a pattern that people enjoy, using voices or instruments.
  • quiet: A sound that is soft and not very easy to hear.
  • sense: A way your body learns about the world, like hearing or seeing.

Good work learning these new words.

Loud and Quiet Sounds

Some sound sources are loud. Some sound sources are quiet.

Examples You Can Imagine

Amouse makes a quiet sound. A lion can make a loud sound.

Making Music and Hearing It

The children are playing instruments. They hear the music with their sense of hearing.

Keeping Ears Safe

Very loud sounds can damage your ears.

Hearing More Sound

If you hold your hand by your ear the sound will be louder. Tara is doing this. She can hear more sound.

Let’s Investigate!

Question: Do big ears help us hear?

Some animals have large ears so they can hear sounds of danger.

Arun makes big card ears to see if it helps him to hear very quiet sounds.

You will need: card, scissors, some sound sources

Safety First:

  • Be careful when using scissors.
  • If you need help cutting the card, ask an adult.

Method:

  1. Make some big ears and test them with your friends.
  2. Plan which quiet sounds you will listen to.
  3. Predict if these quiet sounds will be louder when you use the ears.
  4. Record your results in a table like this.
Sound source Prediction Result
It was the same It was louder
clock it will be louder

Record your results.

Follow-up Questions:

1. Were your predictions right?
2. Why do the big card ears make the sounds louder?
Tap to See Answers
1. Your predictions were right if the sounds seemed louder when you used the big ears. If some sounds did not change, then those predictions were not right.
2. The big card ears can collect more sound waves and guide them towards your ears (like a funnel), so the sound reaching your ear can seem louder.

Well done for testing and recording your results carefully.

How am I doing?

Draw two things that make a quiet sound.

Now draw two things that make a loud sound.

WHAT WE LEARNED

Today we learned that some sounds are loud and some sounds are quiet, and we practiced sorting them into groups. We also made predictions, then checked our results and recorded them in a table. Great job using your scientist skills!
