This Topic is About...

  • I will find out how sound changes as it travels.
  • I will learn how to stay safe when I do a science investigation.

Get ready to explore sound like a scientist!

Key Words

  • changed
  • comparing
  • far away
  • move
  • near
Tap to Learn the Meanings!
  • changed: When something becomes different from before.
  • comparing: Looking at two things to see how they are the same or different.
  • far away: Not close; a long distance from where you are.
  • move: To change position, like going from one place to another.
  • near: Close to you; not far away.

Now you can use these words to talk about how sound travels!

Sound Travels

Sounds move away from a sound source.

Listening With Our Ears

We hear the sound when it gets to our ears. We call this listening.

Let’s Investigate!

Question: Does sound change as it moves?

You will need: a triangle or other instrument

The children are doing an investigation.

Thinking Questions:

1. Who will hear a loud sound?
2. Who will hear a quiet sound?

They are comparing the sound in different places.

Method:

  1. Try doing this science investigation.
  2. Stand in different places and compare the sound you hear.
  3. The sound has changed if it is different in different places.
  4. Try using different sound sources.

Safety First:

  • Do not stand near to a very loud sound. It is not safe.
  • It can damage your ears.

How am I doing?

Do you hear the change in sound? Listen carefully.
Is it a big change or a small change?
Show how loud the sound is in different places with your hands.

Well done for comparing sounds carefully and thinking like a scientist!

Near Sounds Louder

When you are near to a sound source the sound is louder.

Far Away Sounds Quieter

When you are far away from a sound source the sound is quieter.

WHAT WE LEARNED

Today we learned how sound can change when the sound source is near or far away, and how this affects how loud it seems. We also learned how to keep our ears safe by staying away from very loud sounds. Great work—your listening skills are getting stronger!
