  • Unit 1: Living things
  • Unit 2: Sound
  • Unit 3: Materials in my world
  • Unit 4: The Earth
  • Unit 5: Humans
  • Unit 6: Forces

This Topic is About...

  • I will find out what different materials are like.
  • I will observe materials carefully to learn about their properties.

You’re ready to explore materials like a scientist!

Tap to Learn the Meanings!
  • dull: Not shiny and does not reflect much light.
  • flexible: Can bend easily without breaking.
  • hard: Not easy to cut, bend, or scratch.
  • property: Something that tells us what a material is like.
  • rigid: Hard and stiff, and does not bend.
  • rough: Feels bumpy or uneven to touch.
  • shiny: Reflects light and looks bright.
  • smooth: Feels even and not bumpy.
  • soft: Easy to press, squash, or shape.
  • sort: To group things that are the same.
  • strong: Does not break easily when pulled or used.
  • threads: Thin strings used to make fabric.
  • weak: Breaks or bends easily.

Great job learning new science words!

Properties of Materials

Strong, weak, hard and soft are properties of materials.

Different Properties

Flexible, rigid, shiny and dull are different properties.

Rough and Smooth Fabrics

Some fabrics are rough. Some fabrics are smooth.

Feeling the Threads

Look at some fabrics and feel the threads the fabrics are made from.

Bigger Threads

Rough fabrics have bigger threads.

Think Like a Scientist

Rough and smooth fabrics

You will need: four different fabrics, a magnifying glass.

What to do:

  • Observe some different fabrics.
  • Which are rough? Which are smooth?
  • Look closely with a magnifying glass.
  • Feel the fabrics.
  • Sort the fabrics. Put them in order from rough to smooth.

How am I doing?

Have your friends put the fabrics in the same order?

Thinking About the Best Material

Which material is the best? Is it water?

WHAT WE LEARNED

Today we learned that materials have different properties, such as hard, soft, rough, smooth, shiny, or dull. We practised observing and touching materials to find out what they are like. Great work exploring materials like a scientist!
