This Topic is About...

  • I will learn that most of Earth is covered by water.
  • I will learn that land is made of rock and soil.
  • I will investigate rocks by looking at them and sorting them.
  • I will make predictions and check if they are right.

You’re getting ready to explore Earth like a scientist!

Key Words

  • dry
  • soil
  • quarry
  • wet
Tap to Learn the Meanings!
  • dry: Not wet and having little or no water.
  • soil: The loose earth where plants grow.
  • quarry: A place where people dig rocks and stone from the ground.
  • wet: Covered with water or soaked.

Well done learning new Earth science words!

Rocks Make Up Earth

The Earth is made of rocks. You can see rocks on the surface of the land, but it is not so easy to see the rocks under the water.

Big Rocks, Small Rocks

Some rocks are very big and some are very small. Stones are small rocks. Sand is made of very small pieces of rock. Many rocks are deep beneath the surface of the Earth.

Getting Rocks from a Quarry

People dig out rocks in a place called a quarry. They use tools and diggers to get the rocks.

Think like a scientist

Making rocks wet

You will need: rocks, water

You are going to do an investigation about rocks.

Look at some dry rocks. Feel them.

Talk about what you observe.

Point to the rocks in this picture that are wet.

How will your rocks look after getting wet?

How will your rocks feel after getting wet?

Predict what will happen.

Now put water on the rocks.

How does each rock change?

How does it look? How does it feel?

Were your predictions right?

FUN QUESTIONS

1. Look at this climber on the rock.

Tap to see
The climber is using their hands and feet to grip the rock so they do not fall. Great observing!

2. Why do they need dry rock to climb?

Tap to see
Dry rock is less slippery, so their hands and shoes can grip better. This helps them stay safe. Well done!

3. Have you ever slipped on wet rock?

Tap to see
Wet rock can be very slippery because water makes the surface smooth. That is why we need to walk carefully near wet rocks. Great thinking!

Let’s Investigate!

Question: What is on the sea floor?

On the land we see rocks, soil, animals and plants.

This scientist is observing the floor of the sea.

Method:

  1. Predict what we might see on the sea floor if we look under the water.
  2. Draw what you might see on the sea floor.

Well done for making a prediction and using your imagination like a scientist!

WHAT WE LEARNED

Today we learned that land can be made of rocks, and we practiced looking closely at them like scientists. We also made predictions, then checked if our ideas were right during an investigation. Great job exploring and thinking carefully!
