There are many people, both young and old, who enjoy playing computer games. Some games are played on a coordinate grid, where players must hit exact points or move shapes to different positions.

 

 
📘 Worked example

Translate triangle $ABC$ 4 squares left and 2 squares down. Label it triangle $A'B'C'$. Write down the coordinates of the vertices $A'$, $B'$ and $C'$.

Answer:

$A' (-3, -1)$

$B' (0, 1)$

$C' (-2, 2)$

Move each vertex of the triangle 4 squares left and 2 squares down on the coordinate grid.

Vertex A on the original triangle corresponds with vertex A' (A dash) on the translated triangle. Vertex B corresponds with B' and vertex C corresponds with C'.

When writing coordinates, the x-axis value comes first and the y-axis value comes second. Coordinates can be positive or negative depending on where the point lies on the grid.
