🎯 In this topic you will

  • Read and use the information in timetables.

🧠 Key Words

  • timetable
Show Definitions
  • timetable: A table or chart that shows times of events or activities, such as class schedules or transport times.

🧭 Planning Your Journey

Timetables are very useful when you wish to plan a journey, go on a holiday, or meet your friends if you travel by bus, train, or plane.

🚆 Departure and Arrival Times

Timetables tell you when the bus, train, or plane leaves and when it arrives.

🏫 Your School Day

Timetables also tell you what is happening in your days at school.

📘 Worked example

This timetable shows a day at school.

a. Which lesson lasts the longest?

b. Which two lessons last the shortest time?

Answer:

Maths: 1 hour, Science: 45 minutes, Art: 30 minutes, Music: 30 minutes, Games: 1 hour 15 minutes, Literacy: 45 minutes.

Maths has the longest lesson.
Art and Music have the shortest lessons.

Find each lesson length by subtracting the start time from the finish time.

Compare all durations to identify the longest and shortest lessons.

EXERCISES

1. Use this timetable to find the length of each lesson.

a. What is the longest lesson? How long does it last?

b. What is the shortest lesson? How long does it last?

c. Use the information in the timetable to write two more questions and their answers.

$1$

$2$

👀 Show answer
Art: $45$ min, Literacy: $60$ min, Maths: $75$ min, Music: $30$ min, Games: $60$ min, Science: $60$ min.
Longest: Maths ($75$ minutes). Shortest: Music ($30$ minutes).
Example extra questions depend on student choice.

2. Use the timetable to answer the questions.

a. How long does it take bus $1$ to get from the school to Genesta Road?

b. Razan is catching bus $3$ from Baker Avenue to Genesta Road. How long will she be on the bus for?

c. Xun has just missed bus $2$ at the school. How long will he have to wait for bus $3$?

d. Valeria and Duyen are meeting at the school. Valeria will be using bus $2$ and Duyen will be using bus $3$. How long will Valeria have to wait for Duyen?

👀 Show answer
a. $8{:}46-8{:}22=24$ minutes.
b. $8{:}59-8{:}32=27$ minutes.
c. $8{:}45-8{:}19=26$ minutes.
d. $8{:}45-8{:}19=26$ minutes.

3. Here is part of a train timetable.

a. A train leaves Brightville at $10{:}43$. What time does it arrive at Downton?

b. How long does it take for the train leaving at $11{:}25$ from Blue City to get to Downton?

c. How long does a train take to get from Brightville to Blue City and then from Blue City to Central Town?

d. What time does the train leave from Blue City to get to Central Town at $11{:}38$? How long does the journey last?

e. What is the total length of time for the journey from Brightville to Downton, arriving at Downton at $11{:}51$?

👀 Show answer
a. $11{:}23$.
b. $11{:}51-11{:}25=26$ minutes.
c. $22$ minutes then $7$ minutes.
d. Leaves Blue City at $11{:}25$, journey $13$ minutes.
e. $11{:}51-11{:}17=34$ minutes.

🧠 Think like a Mathematician

Work on this task by yourself.

Task: Work out the timetable for each of these three trains.

Train 1 leaves Highland Central to go to Lowland Central.
It leaves $10$ minutes before train $2$ and arrives $10$ minutes after it.

Train $2$ takes $45$ minutes to reach Lowland Central and arrives at $10{:}45$.

Train $3$ leaves Highland Central $20$ minutes before train $2$ and arrives at Lowland Central $20$ minutes after train $1$.

Questions:

a. What time does each train leave Highland Central and arrive at Lowland Central?
b. Which would be the best train to start with?
👀 show answer
  • a.
Train $2$: leaves at $10{:}00$, arrives at $10{:}45$.
Train $1$: leaves at $9{:}50$, arrives at $10{:}55$.
Train $3$: leaves at $9{:}40$, arrives at $11{:}15$.
  • b. Train $2$ is the best to start with because it arrives first, at $10{:}45$.

📘 What we've learned

  • Read and use information from timetables to understand start and finish times.
  • Calculate how long events last using $\text{time}=\text{finish}-\text{start}$.
  • Compare durations to find the longest and shortest lessons or journeys.
  • Answer real-life questions using bus and train timetables (waiting time, travel time, arrival time).
  • Explain confidence in skills by checking: “I can read and use the information in timetables.”
